Social Media Outcome

Take control of your own life, set goals, make positive choices.

“Although social media sites are not the cause of eating disorders, they are a factor in the development of body image issues” Patti Richards.

We’re at a time period, where we consume more digital media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Tik Tok, and more) than ever before. Social media platforms play a significant role on how people engage with their surroundings, and individuals across the globe. Social media is often used to connect with one another — to share information, as well for entertainment purposes. Social media is a relatively new phenomenon, it’s now an integral part of many Americans day to day lives.

With the increase of social media usage on a daily basis, it’s important to recognize digital media consumption has a major impact on body image, self-esteem, and overall mental health. Since social media has changed the way people communicate and interact, it potentially impacts how a person views themselves and others.

This social comparison trap has a possibility of being more damaging for an individual who has or is susceptible to develop an eating disorder, such as anorexia, bulimia, or even binge eating. With a surplus of using filtered images and an overabundance of social media accounts that emphasize appearance and diet culture, social media platforms can quickly become a toxic place. The rising popularity of photo-editing features are facilitating the make-believe aspect of social media in worrying new ways. Portraying highly unrealistic ideals of beauty and body size, reinforced by likes and positive comments making it seem as if it’s a goal that should be strived for. Casually encouraging the habit of creating a false narrative for ourselves; which isn’t just about giving the impression of a desirable lifestyle anymore – it’s around how we actually look.

There are multiple ways to avoid eating disorders due to social media, one of the major factors being taking a break from social media, learn how to love yourself, take care of your body.
